A prenatal ultrasound is basically a test that uses high frequency waves that cannot be heard by humans. Using technology, however, produces baby ultrasound pictures. These tests use a device called the transducer that allows the doctor to look inside the uterus and therefore generate some black and white baby ultrasound pictures that you can look at and wonder at the magic that nature is. The ultrasound is basically used to get images of the baby, the amniotic sac and the placenta to ensure that everything is in order. If you are medically insured for this too, then the medical insurance company will take up the charges for the same. But the joy of seeing what really comes out after the process is something that you will be amazed with. Just make sure not to opt for this procedure too early in the pregnancy.

The ultrasound of baby is medically required to be done only about three times in the entire pregnancy term. The first one is generally done in the first semester almost after a few weeks of the pregnancy and then again towards the middle of the second trimester. Sometimes the third scan may not need to be done at all.

You may be all excited to see the first sight of your baby but you also need to be prepared that the first ultrasound does not really tell you much unless the doctor is helping you decode what is what on the monitor.
